Main foci of African trypanosomiasis

Sleeping sickness is found in about 16 African countries, where the disease is restricted to some foci. Global prevalence rate is on the rise, about 20-fold higher than 20 years ago, so about 500,000 people would be infected. The rate is very high in Congo’s countries and Angola, high in Sudan and Uganda, intermediate in Guinea (Conakry), Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Chad and CAR, and low in Senegal, Mali, Ghana, Togo, Nigeria, Gabon and Tanzania. No reliable data are currently available from other countries. – Diagram realised from a projection of Mercanti –
