Main foci of American trypanosomiasis

Chagas disease is present in all of Latin America countries, but the distribution varies according to the type of transmission, permanent or sporadic. In 2000, the global prevalence rate was thought to be about 12 millions of people, and the annual incidence rate about 200,000 new cases. Due to internal immigration and deforestation, the disease has spread out in Amazonia, which was so far weakly concerned. – Diagram realised from a projection of Mercanti –
