Algeria, Atlas mountain range – A village in Great Kabylia (1973)

Sandflies are endemic in areas with a Mediterranean climate, where they are mostly found in rural zones. These insects are nocturnal, and lay eggs in organic material into rock crevices, animal’s holes, hen roosts or rabbit hutches. Epidemiological studies about leishmaniases require precise indenfication of the vector, and insects are captured by night using light traps.
