Amebic dysentery – trophozoites of Entamoeba histolytica in an intestine biopsy

France, CHU Angers Parasitologie-Mycologie

Numerous trophozoites that invaded mucosa are easily diagnosed due to typical nuclear features, namely a peripheral chromatine arranged in fine granules evenly disposed, giving a beaded appearance (“string of pearls”), along with a central or subcentral karyosome. Entamoeba histolytica is the causative agent of amebiasis.
