Dipylidium caninum – gravid proglottid

France, Gari-Toussaint Martine

Dipylidium caninum is a tapeworm (from 50 to 60 cm long). The usual definitive hosts are dogs or cats, and the intermediate host is a flea. Human infections are rarely observed, occurring mostly in chidren who become contaminated by swallowing fleas that harbor larvae.
