Dioctophyme renale – Egg (60-80 µm X 40-45 µm) in urine

France, Pays Jean-François

Egg of Dioctophyme renale is roughly similar to that of T. trichiura, but the outer shell is very mammillated. Adult worm is 14 cm to 100 cm long, and lives in the upper urinary tract of canids, which become infected by eating fishes (2nd paratenic intermediate host) or, more rarely, annelids (1st intermediate host). Human disease is exceptional, and assumes the features of fever, lumbar pain, and blood or pus in urine.
