Adult female worm raises a blister on the skin. When the affected part of the body comes into contact with cool freshwater, the blister ruptures, leaving an ulcer at its base through which the worm’s uterus prolapses then ejects hundredths of thousands of microfilariae. Ejection of microfilariae may also occur into a joint.
