Loiasis – Calabar swellings (patient from Western Equatorial Africa)

Calabar swellings are transient, unilateral, fugitive and recurrng edemas that predominate on the extremities. Frequently preceded by pain, they develop rapidly and may persist up to 3 days. Termed according to Calabar, capital of the State of Cross River (South East Nigeria).
