Onchocerciasis – Pigmented chorioretinitis

France, Bessières Marie-Hélène

In onchocerciasis, ocular involvement comprises keratitis, which is caused by death of microfilaria, and / or chorioretinitis, which is due to the immune reaction to soluble antigens secreted by larvae. As a result, blindness may occur. On this picture, a large area is concerned by a high-grade chorioretinitis. Patient’s vision has collapsed, since retina was destroyed and contains pigment clumps. Moreover, papilla is atrophied.
