Loiasis – Calabar swellings

Calabar swellings are transient, unilateral, fugitive and recurring edemas that predominate on the extremities. Frequently preceded by pain, they develop rapidly and may persist up to 3 days. Termed according to Calabar, capital of the State of Cross River (South East Nigeria). (cf. H037)
