Direct examination is essential for the diagnostic approach of tinea capitis. Here, the infected hair is abnormally enlarged and altered by small arthrospores, as typically seen in tinea infections caused by anthropophilic Trichophyton species. Hair and scalp scale cultures grew Trichophyton tonsurans.
