Black hairy tongue

Brownish or blackish surface with hyperparakeratosis of the papillae caracterize the black hairy tongue. Even if samples on the tongue, may grow with a few yeast colonies of Candida, it is not an oral thrush. Etiology is uncertain; poor oral hygiene, smoking or alcohol consumption and digestive deseases have been evocated to play a role.
