Syncephalastrum racemosum - Microscopic morphology [x1000]

Syncephalastrum racemosum is responsible for mucormycosis (Mucorales). The hyphae are wide not septate.  The genus Syncephalastrum is characterised by the formation of cylindrical merosporangia on the sporangiophore. Sporangiospores are arranged in a single row within the merosporangia. At maturity, lysis of the sporangia allows the release of the mérospores, also visible here.
