Skin: chromoblastomycosis - muriform cells at histopathological examination [HES x1000]

The melanized fungal elements shown in this picture can be considered the hallmark of chromoblastomycosis. This structures divide by internal septation and are sometimes called “sclerotic” or “fumagoid” cells, “copper pennies” or “Medlar bodies”. In this patient, returning from Thailand, Fonsecaea monophora was the causative agent.
